New Pond Boat Building Workshop for KIDS & TOTS
June 17th, 2011
Once again, the Lakeside Wooden Boat Society is offering pond boat building for youngsters under the white tent in Central Park. Under the direction of Lakesider Sally Adams and her group of volunteers, children (K-3rd grade recommended) may build a balloon powered “jet boat” or a “super sailboat” (3rd grade-5th grade recommended). Using various tools such as hammers, simple saws and drill press, children are guided from station to station using built jigs and precut parts donated by craftsman, Dick Swanson.
This year, LWBS is letting preschoolers get in on the fun. “Puddle boats” may also be assembled at a workshop geared for them (Ages 4-K). A parent or caregiver must stay during the experience. Workshops are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the 2011 season. “Puddle boats” meet Tuesday from 9:00-9:45; “Super sailboats” meet Tuesday from 10:30-12:00; “Jet boats meet Thursday from 9:00a to 10:30a and11:00a to 12:30p. Registration is done on the lawn in front of the Rhein Center and the cost ($10.00) is collected at the time of registration.
Relatives and friends are invited to watch as the children assemble their boats and become part of the 2011 Lakeside fleet. Bring your cameras and Lakeside smiles! Get wet launching your own wooden boat again and again!

Amazing Grace
February 21st, 2011
While the snow has been piling higher on the Lake Erie shore, the LWBS Amazing Grace Cruise Committee (AGCC) has been keeping warm by working on an expanded program of Lake Erie cruises. In the last three summer seasons at Lakeside LWBS has offered regular Sunday evening cruises on Amazing Grace, the restored 1937 32’ Richardson Cruisabout. Each year the cruises have become more and more popular with over one hundred passengers last season alone on Amazing Grace and many more on LWBS member Lymans. Amazing Grace has become a Lakeside icon at the pier. She brings back fond memories for those who remember the days when beautiful wooden boats were commonly seen docked at the Lakeside pier. Many of the passengers have wanted to introduce their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to the joys and pleasures of cruising on Lake Erie aboard a classic wooden boat.
Cruises became so popular that LWBS members classic wood boats were added to the schedule to fulfill the demand and still some were not able to be accommodated. As a result the Amazing Grace Cruise Committee has been working to develop a plan to provide many more cruising options at Lakeside. Our brainstorming with Amber LeSage, Lakeside Group Sales Manager has produced a long list of possibilities: Sunday Evening Cruises Custom Cruises Wedding Cruises Fireworks Cruise Fishing Charters Cedar Point trips Island Hopping Downtown Sandusky Shopping Trips Sandusky Bay Historic Tour August Cup Race Spectating SOS Mouse Island Race Spectating Kelly’s Island Swim Spectating West Bay Inn Sunset dinner cruise Historic Rattlesnake Island Tour Birding Tours Fall Color Tours Pelee Island Tour
An AGCC cruise plan is coming together with the assistance of Lakeside staff and others. Don Schafer, owner of Bar Harbor Reserve, has offered a discount on a covered dock to house the Richardson and Dwight Davis of Classic Marine and the operations manager of the Amazing Grace, also provides expert maintenance services . The AGCC members are Frank Baker, Ron Jacobs and Bill Drackett and input is welcomed. Please post comments, ideas and suggestions on the LWBS Blog page.
Think Spring
February 21st, 2011
Hey everyone, Is it hard to even remember last summer and the joyous, sunny, warm days on Lake Erie? Is the snow getting to you? Well, try to remember last summer. It was an absolutely wonderful Lakeside year!! The sun was shining, the lake was beautiful, and the days were warm – very warm. Pond boat classes were filled every week, Sunday evening boat rides had lines forming early with folks anxious to go out onto the lake, LWBS sponsored really well attended picnics in the park, and the Boat Show brought in wooden boat lovers from miles around. Now is the time to begin thinking about summer 2011! It really will be here again soon. And we want to offer even more LWBS events than ever.
The Lakeside Wooden Boat Show is scheduled for July 17, 2011 – so mark your calendars! Sally Adams, who was wonderful teaching the classes last year, will return once again as the Pond Boat instructor and Sunday afternoon boat rides will begin on the first Sunday of the Lakeside Chautauqua summer season. Discussions are ongoing on how to offer more opportunities for folks to enjoy rides on the beautiful ‘Amazing Grace’, the classic and historic 1938 Richardson. If you have thoughts or suggestions, please pass them along.
We will begin posting regular updates on what is going on with LWBS, so be on the lookout for regular musings. We would also love to have articles on your wooden boat experiences. Send us memories, thoughts, photos. We’ll include them on the LWBS website (with your permission).
An LWBS meeting was held last September at the lovely home of Mame & Bill Drackett to reflect on the 2010 season as well as to begin planning for the future. The mission and purpose of the LWBS was updated to reflect the objectives and goals. Officers and committee chairs for 2011 were chosen.
Officers are: President: Phil Savage Vice President: Frank Baker Secretary: Brenda Baker Treasurer: Phil Chase
2010-2012 Board Members are: Board Members: Brenda Baker, Frank Baker, Tim Beachy, Phil Chase, Dwight Davis, Bill Drackett, Gerry Drackett, Mame Drackett, Christi Dunfee, P. A. Dunfee, Dan Fought, Ron Jacobs, Marsha Jenkins, LuAnn Ramsdell, Betsey Savage, Phil Savage, Wayne Warden.
We will be posting current committees and volunteer opportunities – and there are plenty, so if you would like to become more involved, let us know. If you’re currently not a member, this is a good time to join!! There will be more events and information coming regularly from LWBS with a calendar of events on the website so you’ll be able to check on what is happening.
Looking forward to seeing you all soon. Think spring!!!
