Children’s Pond Boat Coordinator/Instructor Offered by The Lakeside Wooden Boat Society (LWBS)

Lakeside Wooden Boat Society (LWBS) is an organization of Lakesiders who love wooden boats and strive to honor the current and historical roles played by boats in the economic and recreational culture unique to Lake Erie. Our mission is to promote the art and craft of wooden boats by offering seminars and classes to children and adults.

Position: Program Coordinator/Instructor – Children’s Pond Boatbuilding Classes

Length of Employment: First 9 weeks of Chautauqua Season and approximately 3 days preparation prior to beginning of season for orientation/training and site preparation

Hours: Part time – 10 to 12 hours a week which requires the following:

Functioning as Registrar for signup- Each Sunday outside Rhein Center Hours- 12:45-3:15pm

One weekday of instruction-three classes under the LWBS Tent/Central Park 9:00am-10:30am and 11:00am -12:30pm (Balloon-powered jet boats for kids entering K-3rd grades) 2:00pm – 3:30pm (Sailboats for kids entering 4th – 6th grade)

Managing inventory and assembly of necessary supplies for classes. Class Kits and almost all supplies supplied by LWBS

Qualifications:

Available to work through the 9th week of the Chautauqua Season

Comfortable being knowledgeable and enthusiastic about promoting Lakeside’s programming and especially the opportunities available through LWBS for recreation and learning at Lakeside. A love of water and boats helpful but not necessary

Strong background, ability, experience, and love of working with children in an instructional or recreational setting

Enjoys using well defined instructional format that also lends itself to spontaneity and creativity with the students. Good humor and flexibility a must in working with kids and parents who are on vacation!

A style of leadership under which both children and adult volunteers will enjoy working

Students (at least a rising college sophomore) or adults welcome to apply

Primary Duties:

Plan & set up class site (with help of LWBS volunteers) & conduct simple pond boat building classes using a fully detailed instructional manual provided by LWBS

Recruit and coordinate summer program volunteers ( teens and adults) to assist

Determine and maintain class materials inventory needs each week

Coordinate with LWBS Pond Boat Chair the advertising and publicity of classes

Register students, collect fees from parents at time of registration ( unlike lottery system of Rhein Center)

Stay in close weekly communication with Pond Boat chair to provide an ongoing evaluation/feedback of classes from students, parents, etc

Submit evaluation and summary at end of season

Wage: $10 per hour
